Recount Shows Heidi Keyes Wins BOE Seat

A recanvas of Tuesday's BOE election confirmed that Democrat Heidi Keyes eeked out a victory over Republican Artie Kassimis. The recount was conducted on Saturday at Norwalk City Hall.

According to Stuart Wells, the Democratic Registrar of Voters,  the margin of votes between the two candidates was 6 votes.

A recount of the election was mandated by state law because there was less than .5% difference in the votes between the two candidates from Tuesday night's election.

Mr. Kassimis ran for the BOE as part of a group who called themselves Parents Not Politicians which included Steven A. Colarossi, Erin Halsey and Sue Haynie. They were endorsed by the Republican Town Committee. With the exception of Mr. Kasimis all three other Republican candidates were elected to the BOE.

Mr. Colarossi released a statement to NorwalkNet: "Although I am personally disappointed that my dear friend Artie Kassimis was not victorious, I am honored to be serving with Heidi Keyes who, as a concerned parent who wants to improve communication, will be an asset to the Board of Education."

  1. Moina, (unrelated, but wanted to send you a note)

I recently discovered your blog - thank you for this. There is a shortage of good local school info in the Norwalk area. I find that most folks just assume everyone is from the area & knows all the backstories.

A question for you that might make a good blog post - what can someone new to an area do to help their local elementary school? I don't have any students yet, but will eventually have 3 (my oldest is 15mth old). We're moving into the district for Silvermine Elem, and are wondering how best to get involved (even before the kids start attending).

Also - It would be awesome if you could put together a blurb on each school in town. We had a very difficult time as we tried to figure out the various schools (we're not from the area, and struggled to find more detail behind the standard answer we got anytime we asked someone about schools "Norwalk is terrible, go to Wilton or Westport".

  2. Three kids under 15 months? Wow I'm amazed you have the energy to post anything! My advice:start asking around with neighbors and acquaintances, and attend a BOE meeting or 2. Also, check out the magnet and charter schools to find out about applications.

I'm sure you would be welcome at Silvermine School activities. Maybe you can call the head of the PTO or the principal if you have specific questions. Good luck!
